Circumstances: The victim was last seen around 7/13/08 when deputies were called to her residence in reference to a disturbance. The victim was reported missing on 12/8/08 by her estranged daughter. The victim lived with 35 year-old Edward Caldwell, a registered sex offender and convicted felon, who met the victim’s grandsons while in prison. Caldwell moved in with the victim in October 2007. Since then, he had taken complete financial advantage of her; obtaining Power of Attorney over all of her affairs. Caldwell had joint access to all of Mabel’s bank accounts and social security deposits. When questioned about Mabel’s whereabouts, Caldwell gave differing accounts of where she might be. All leads were followed up with negative results. Investigation revealed that Caldwell had gotten rid of all of Mabel’s personal belongings and was in the process of selling her house and collecting the profits. In May of 2009, Caldwell was charged with Aggravated Manslaughter, Elderly Abuse, Exploitation of the Elderly, three counts of Theft, three counts of Fraud, and three counts of Forgery.
